I visited the exhibition Sustainable Homes 2011 in Naas , Sweden (North East of Gothenburg).
They had 6 cabins and they have used materials that are natural and healthy for both you and the surroundings.

The cabins are situated next to the beach of the lake and have been decorated and designed with local products.

I also visited the exhibition hall where they showed local and sustainable materials and products that were both new and re-used.

Whitebeck Court is an extra care scheme where I was involved in the design up to RIBA stage D at West and Machell Architects. You can find my design plans and elevations in Sketch-Up and Vector Works at www.ylimaki.co.uk

Whitebeck Court is a refurbishment of a 1960's tower block with 91 apartments but it also has a wellbeing centre on the ground floor and a "Sky Lounge" on the top floor with magnificent views over Manchester.

What would not be cosier than your own wood fire? Ok, maybe not in this heat wave but something to dream about when it actually gets colder and yes that will happen sooner or later.

Hölick Sea Resort is located in a pine forest on the coast north of the Swedish city Hudiksvall. It is designed by Mats Edlund and Henrietta Palmer. The wooden 'lodge' creates a private and intimate experience with the surroundings. Nature is the main focus in this design.

Sustainable Town Houses in Stockholm

Sustainable townhouses in Norra Djurgards Staden Stockholm by C.F. Møller Architects.
A competition they were placed first in designing 18 sustainable town houses.
The area will be completed to a high profile environmental area.

Solar panels, massing, green roofs, rainwater collection in a pond and heat recovery drives the projects sustainable approach and it looks good too, exciting architecture with its staggered form. You can build interesting architecture together with a green approach.

John Bauer (1882-1918) was a Swedish painter and illustrator born and raised in Jonkoping. I just love his images of gnomes, trolls, princesses, fairy tales and elfs. Many images set in the mystical forest. (source http://runeberg.org/jbauer/)

The Swedish government has reduced its budget for forest protection and proposes to increase forest production. [Paper Cuts]

I have now gone back to my original idea about paper and concentrate on the issue about deforestation in the world but also in Sweden, where my project is situated. Paper is made out of trees and Sweden have plenty of trees and woodland. With this project I want to highlight the use of paper (a combination in the arts and environmental field), how to produce it and how to recycle paper. The project is situated next to a paper mill in Jonkoping, Sweden and is proposed as a Paper Arts Museum which also will tackle the issues of deforestation on a local/national and global point of view. (The World Forestry Congress started today in Argentina which will cover social, ecological and economic aspects of sustainable forestry management in a local, regional and world context.)

The design will be an architectural solution in the broader meaning, it will be a informative and a successful place for people, young and old, to visit and learn more about paper and where it is originated from. How can we use recycled paper in a creative way? Saving forests is one of the most efficient climate remedies.

There will be exhibition spaces full of daylight/restaurants with locally harvested food from the land and waters in the surrounding area/bars/ learning facilities for young and old to learn about paper and the forest/Artists workshops and studios for their paper art/shops/forest Classrooms, which is outdoor classrooms for kids to learn and other outdoor areas for the visitors to enjoy.

Of course the building will be constructed of sustainable materials and timber sourced from sustainable sources with the latest technologies.

The site itself is situated nearby beautiful lakes with amazing vistas of the lakes, in Jonkoping south of Sweden.It is situated on a Brownfield/storage site, which is a perfect opportunity for redevelopment. The whole area will be redeveloped in the future with new residential areas and a new fast train station is proposed south of the lake. This Paper Arts Museum will attract many visitors interested in art and the environment from both local and national areas to enjoy a good day out and learn more about how important the forest is. Did you know that rainforests for example absorbs nearly 15% of all man-made C02 emissions? (source www.rainforestsos.org)
